Cerrudo Services installed a new floating dock and gangway at US Coast Guard Station Monterey.  Work included installation of five 18 inch galvanized steel piles, reinforcement of an existing gangway landing and installation of all utility systems.

Each pile and pile bracing was designed, fabricated and galvanized prior to installation.  Because of existing rip rap, the piles were not driven, but attached to the existing pier with two sets of struts and collars.  On site customization for each pile bracing was necessary to secure each pile.  A diver was utilized to secure the piles.

The 100 foot floating concrete dock, also fabricated prior to construction, consisted of two 50 foot sections.  A four foot marine mammal barrier runs along the perimeter of the dock to prevent damage by seal haul-out.  New electric, water, sewer and telecommunications utilities were provided for the dock.

Monterey Bay’s abundance of protected marine mammals required the presence of an on site marine mammal monitor to observe and record pinniped behavior and disturbances.
