Cerrudo Services designed a drain water diversion network to reduce the infiltration of rainwater into a landfill located at a U.S. Department of Energy owned experimental test facility.  The design was challenging due to the varying soil composition of the hills in addition to various exposed and hidden bedrock.  The approved design consisted of a series of French drains on the south hillside and a roadside V-ditch at the base of the east hillside.  Existing drainage systems to the north and west of the landfill were to be upgraded and re-armored with rip rap and vegetation.  The construction phase of the project was challenging due to the remote location of the jobsite in addition to strict security procedures.  There were elements of the design that needed to be revised during construction to “field fit” actual conditions and the slope of the south hillside required precise heavy equipment operation along with innovative material placement methods.
